With the popularity of short videos on the Internet, we spend so much time looking through media. If the videos are longer than 10 minutes or do not catch our eye within 5 seconds, we may just swipe away.
Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, we spend more and more time on our phones. Hundreds and hundreds of short clips can be scrolled through in a day.
We always seem to be running out of time in our fast paced environment. We are not even patient enough to finish a 20 second video.
Does this mean that feature films are too long for us now?
"Detective Chinatown 3"
During the Lunar New Year holidays in China, the film box office has answered this question. “Hi, Mom” and “Detective Chinatown 3” became the top hits during the holiday break.
Both of them individually reached over 700M box office in 3 weeks. This number is much higher than previous years.
"Hi, Mom!"
One of the reasons why there has been so much box office success is that people miss going to theatres to watch movies. Cinemas have a different atmosphere. One can immerse oneself in the character’s space, see what they see, feel what they feel, and fully escape the outside world.
But most importantly, the two films are not just comedies that make us laugh. They also explore the Chinese culture, make us cry and reflect on our lives.

People often feel empty after scrolling through a tremendous amount of short videos online, which reflects a lack of quality content.
Relatable content can evoke different emotions. We develop affection for the characters through feature films. They give us the opportunity to slow down and refresh our minds.

Great content is the main reason for these movies' tremendous success in the box office this February. It is also the reason why people are more likely to enjoy a film than a short internet clip.
In 2021 we look forward to more thought-provoking Chinese movies that can make audiences fully engaged!
