Looking for the perfect film for your next movie night? Wanting to get into Asian cinema but don’t know where to start? Check out these movies nominated at this year’s Asian Film Awards!
The 14th Asian Film Awards was held on Wednesday Oct 27th. The ceremony was originally meant to take place in Busan, South Korea, before Covid-19 put everyone on lockdown. Instead, the awards were streamed on the Asian Film Awards Academy’s YouTube page.
It was actually lucky for people like me in different time zones who wanted to stay up until 3 a.m. to watch.
The online ceremony went off without a hitch, with the presenters and winners sending in videos from wherever they are quarantining. It was also fun to see everyone cheering for their favorite movies in the comments!
Unsurprisingly, “Parasite” won for Best Film. Director Boon Joon-ho won this award for two of his previous movies, “The Host” and “Mother.” But “Parasite” only won four of its ten nominations.
The winner’s circle consisted of a wide diversity of films from many different countries, unlike the sweeps that can happen at the Oscars or Emmys. Pacharin Surawatanapongs, the winner for Best Costume Design, said in her acceptance speech that this was her first award!
