Every time a big celebrity-centered event, like the recent Grammy Awards, rolls around the corner, the Red Carpet seems to be just as important as the event itself. Celebrities strut across the plush piece of carpeting while paparazzi flash their cameras and bombard the stars with a million questions, the most common being: “Who are you wearing tonight?”
Inspired by the glitz and glamour of one of the biggest annual celebrations of music, we thought it would be interesting to look into some Chinese Fashion Designers you probably have never heard of.
XIMONLEE was born in Manchuria and attended the Parsons School of Design. Despite having only graduated in 2014, XIMONLEE is already receiving international recognition for his work. In 2015, Kanye West commented on his work, saying that XIMONLEE was “killing it” during a fashion show. XIMONLEE is working to bring avant-garde fashion into the real world by making it accessible to the commercial fashion industry.
2 ANGEL CHEN
Angel Chen is another young rising star in the global fashion industry. Born in Shenzhen, China, she moved to London at the age of 17 to pursue her path in the fashion industry. She was named one of Forbes China “30 Under 30” in 2016 and has worked with many celebrities, including Fan Bingbing and Kris Wu. She is known for using stunning colors and fusing together Eastern and Western influences.
3 LAURENCE XU
Laurence Xu was born in Shangdong, China and is now based in Paris. He is best known for the elaborate dress he designed for Fan Bingbing for the Festival de Cannes, one that made heads turn. Like Angel Chen, he is heavily influenced by both Eastern and Western cultures and blends the two into his craft. He understood the power of Westernization, but also wanted to bring back the traditional Chinese fashion that got lost as China becomes increasingly westernized.
