What is the Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF)?
VAFF is the longest running Asian film festival in Canada. It was founded in 1995 and debuted in September 1997.
Since then, tens of thousands of film lovers have seen their diverse selection of North American and international films.
VAFF is dedicated to promoting and celebrating the diversity of Asian culture and identity in film and media. They aims to help Asian actors and filmmakers in North America express themselves on screen.
This year, Vancouver Asian Film Festival will expand to include virtual screenings in addition to in-person screenings.
Look out for new films from around the world during the festival. VAFF will be happening from November 4 to November 14, 2021.
What is the MAMM Program?
MAMM stands for Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon. It is an annual short film-making competition organized by Vancouver Asian Film Festival.
This year, MAMM is celebrating its 16th year of supporting, fostering and showcasing emerging Asian and mixed Asian filmmakers.
With MAMM, you can choose to make a 10-minute short film or a 1-minute ultra short film.
Each year, the best 8 teams from the 10-minute shorts category are selected from a myriad of video pitch submissions. These finalists receive $500 per team.
The selected 8 teams get masterclass-level MAMMentorship by industry professionals. They then enter a 10-day filmmaking contest from production start to finish.
To learn more, watch the recorded MAMM 16 info session and a bonus talk with Aaron Au on VAFF Facebook.
Aaron is a MAMM 7 alumni and one of the judges for this year's MAMM. In the talk, he shared his experience working as a producer, writer and director.
He gave valuable advice for future MAMMers and great tips on developing short films.
